I paint primarily in Acrylics on canvas and have experimented with varied styles and subject matter. Landscapes, still lifes, portraits and abstracts all interest me. My greatest joy is that I continue learning. I truly love painting and am particularly motivated by the development of nuance in color, tone and texture.
For me, the excitement of painting is portraying the familiar as I see it, or imagine seeing it. My intention is that my images express my personal passion and love of the world. I am intrigued by it's cities, its back alleys and more than anything its life. When I paint, it is with the hope it will evoke a reaction in people that causes them to relate in new ways to what they see. I strive to create work that inspires an emotional as well as an intellectual response in those who view it.
I've been a weekend painter off and on for more than 50 years but made a living Monday through Friday in an entirely corporate life. I started what grew to become a national medical equipment company and sold it twenty-five years later. Then, over the next two decades, I traveled weekly to cities from coast to coast on behalf of a Dallas-based investment banking firm presenting full-day seminars for business owners on Mergers and Acquisitions. Between trips I painted.
Finding the weekly travel schedule grueling, and with the gentle encouragement of my wife, I finally retired to do what I love most--paint full time. So in a remarkable turn of events, I now fly anywhere my imagination takes me and I never have to board a plane.
While I don't speak to audiences anymore, I am still communicating.
Painting is, after all, an exquisitely luminous language.
Austin, Texas is my home and while most of my paintings celebrate the great Southwest, having spent the earlier part of my life in Wisconsin, some of my work continues to reflect the Midwest.
I sit on the board of Austin's Creative Arts Society (CAS), and am also a member of Lakeway Painters and The Austin Visual Arts Association.
